OK, this guy is just the king of retro mashups. And fun? Ha! I’d have him over for dinner anytime. Love, love, love this stuff.

I spent a goodly chunk of time online trying to find more Duncan Marquiss works like this. There are a few, but none have anywhere near the impact that this one carries. It’s one of those WTF images that are just too cool, too original to bear any sort of comparison.

I completely love this guy’s work. It’s like a what a non-grimy Tom Waits would do if he were a Ingmar Bergman’s little brother. These pics are rife with romance, the sort of world you just want to climb into like thick cosy bedclothes.

I love this site. At first glance it’s all cutesy and pink. And then you notice the severed fingers in the heart pattern. Nice touch. Now this is a painter with clear and original avatars. Oh! I just glory with delight at the dark fun on her pages.

Surrealism, idiosyncratic symbolism, nostalgia. Blogs, toys, paintings, prints. The guy’s pretty much inventing a culture around his work.
I’m sure psychologist have calculated historical/ontogenetic timelines of what will be considered nostalgic in any given person’s lifetime. I figure once early childhood elements have percolated through a decade of nightmares, you pretty much have a lifetime bag of stuff to make you sigh and cringe. In Yosuke Ueno’s case, early anime and video games are now ready to serve on the surrealist canvas.

This lady uses the time-honored technique of obscuring the features of her models to powerful effect. I’m still useless at telling women photographers from men when it comes to figurative work. There really does seem to be no dividing line. Either it’s exploitative crap (regardless of how much skin is involved), or the work is transcendent in some way. That is, it exceeds, in one or more ways, the sum of its parts (subject, medium, genre, technique, etc.).

You know, if ever they find out who Banksy really is, I bet he turns out to be this guy. The spirit of the work is the same. And even before I read anything about this guy, I would have bet money he was from the UK. Turns out he is. Hmm…

I was drawn to this artist because of that first image – which I thought was a manipulated photo. Too bad it ain’t, but wow, that is a very cool pic.
Nice. An oldie but a goodie.
